A Conversation with Bianca Modo Isom

Bianca invited me into her inner circle of inspired, professional women last week for a Physical Disobedience Book Party in Atlanta. She is an image consultant and creative coach helping entrepreneurs "assert their authentic passion and power to build branding strategies and increase their professional presence." She also coaches and mentors a FIERCE high school step team and is mom to an 18 month old boy. Our conversation touched on feminism, fashion, fitness, racial disparity, and incorporating rest and comfort as key elements of self-care and productivity. We had plenty to discuss after one attendee was late for the event, having been sidelined by a human trafficking sting at a gas station where she stopped for fuel on her way to meet us. We ended with the conclusion that if we lift our eyes to see what is around us, we are so much better able to serve our communities and our own lives. Thank you, Bianca, for being the catalyst for such a wonderful conversation! Below are a few of her thoughts on beauty, ambition, and healing.

If you could have any three, living women over for dinner, who would they be and why?

Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Beyonce Knowles-Carter

What are a few things that currently infuriate you?

I'm infuriated that people don't have access to affordable healthcare. Sex trafficking. #metoo being such a common experience for so many of us. And anyone trying to control what decisions women make with their own bodies.

And a few that inspire you?

People like Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Beyonce Knowles-Carter or anyone else who have visions to complete something amazing and fully go for their dreams without letting anyone get in their way. People who are resilient and understand that healing their bodies and minds are the tools to manifesting big dreams.

When anger or frustration builds, do you feel it in your body? If so, how or where?

Yes! My upper shoulders and back.

How do you relieve those symptoms? What are your fail-safe, behavioral release valves?

Meditation, long baths, and massages.

What kind of exercise, alternative therapy, or play have you always wanted to try but never got around to it?

Reiki healing (Note from Sarah: See the Alternative Therapies chapter in Physical Disobedience if you want more in depth description of this and how it works!)

Describe something beautiful (or beautifully disobedient) that you saw recently.

I look in the mirror and see my stretch marks from giving birth, and I feel so beautiful! I know most people do not feel the same way, but the stretch marks show me how amazing my body is.
